Definition

A publish/subscribe (pub/sub) system accepts subscriptions from a large number of subscribers and monitors a stream of incoming events. The subscribers are notified instantly when a newly arriving event matches their desires. When the number of subscriptions is very large, it is critical to ensure that the newly arrived event can be processed quickly so that users can be notified instantly. The problem becomes worse if there are many events. To support instant notification of subscribers and high throughput of incoming events, the subscriptions may have to be properly organized into an indexing structure.
