Definition

The emergence of networked storage has allowed organizations to de-couple their server and storage purchasing decisions. Thus, multiple application/database servers can share storage on the same network attached storage (NAS) server, or on a block storage controller via a storage area network protocol (SAN). This is unlike direct attached storage systems (DAS) where disks are connected to an application to a database server. In DAS environments, even if one only needs to add more storage, one has to also add more servers. Various types of storage networkingprotocols have emerged to support both NAS and SAN systems. Currently, the same storage boxes can support both distributed file (NAS) protocols such as NFS and CIFS, and block storage (SAN) protocols such as iSCSI and FCP (fiber channel).
