Founded in 1952, the Operations Research Society of America was the major U.S. society for operations researchers. It was merged with The Institute of Management Sciences (TIMS) into the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) effective January 1, 1995. The purposes of ORSA were (1) the advancement of operations research through the exchange of information, (2) the establishment and maintenance of professional standards of competence for work known as operations research, (3) the improvement of the methods and techniques of operations research, (4) the encouragement and development of students of operations research, and (5) the useful applications of operations research. During the period, ORSA published the journal Operations Research(in 42 volumes), as well as other journals (some jointly with TIMS).
