Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary is located in the Senegal River Delta near the border with Mauritania in the northwestern corner of Senegal. It has a core protection area of 160 km2 and comprises a large lake surrounded by streams, ponds and backwaters. It is full of vitality due to diverse species but also experiences frequent threats. Approximately 1.5 million birds live in the sanctuary, such as the white pelican, the purple heron, the African spoonbill, the great egret and the cormorant.
