This geopark is located in Datong and Yanggao Counties in Datong City, Shanxi Province. It became a national geopark in 2009. The Datong Basin, which is located at the northern end of the horst and graben system in Shanxi, is the only basin with volcanic activity in Shanxi’s graben system and is an intraplate rifted fault-depression volcanic basin. The main geological features are Quaternary volcano clusters and karst landscapes. Thirty-two cinder cones, mixed volcanic cones and lava cones are well preserved and these features manage to record the nearly 300,000-year-long magmatic evolution history of the graben basins of the Datong Volcano.
