Zhangjiajie Sandstone Peak Forest National Geopark was accredited as a global geopark in 2004. It is located in northwestern Hunan Province, China, and covers a total area of 398 km2. It has four main scenic districts, namely, Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Suoxiyu Valley, Tianzi Mountain and Yangjiajie Nature Reserve, in addition to Huanglong Cave. The peak forest developed in the Devonian Taiyunguan and Huangjiadeng formations and represents a unique landform that formed because of its unique tectonic location and under particular neotectonic conditions and exogenous processes. It has more than 3,000 rock peaks, including 1,000 peaks more than 200 m high, such as Jinbianyan, which exceeds 350 m. The geomorphology includes mesas, platforms, cliffs, peak clusters, peak forests, crosscuts, stone gates, arches, bridges and valleys.
