This is a lake landscape in an arid region formed by wind-erosion depressions or depressions between sand dunes that are filled with water. The water can come from rivers or groundwater when the ground surface is eroded deep enough to reach an aquifer. This type of lake is relatively shallow and tends to be intermittent and mobile. The Yueya (Crescent) Lake in Dunhuang, Gansu Province, is a typical wind-erosion lake. It formed from wind erosion of a depression between sand dunes that reached the water table, and groundwater is the main source of water. As such, this lake is a permanent lake filled with water for the entire year, and there is minimal change in the water level. The lake is 455 m long and 65 m wide with a north-south crescent shape, which is where its name originated.
