West Lake was previously known as Qiantang Lake, and it is also called Xizi Lake. It is located to the west of Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province. It is famous for its lake and hill scenery and numerous famous cultural relics. It is a famous scenic attraction for tourists and has long been considered the ‘Paradise on Earth’. It has an area of 5.6 km2 and a volume of 110 million m3. The average water depth is 1.97 m. The lake is divided into five parts by Sudi (Su Dyke) and Baidi (Bai Dyke), including the Inner Lake, Outer Lake, Yue Lake, West Inner Lake and Xiaonan (Little South) Lake. In 1982, West Lake was accredited as a ‘National Scenic Area’, and in 1985, it was selected as one of ‘China’s Top Ten Scenic Areas’. In 2011, it was included on the list of World Cultural Heritage (Fig. 12).
