This geopark is located along the southern part of the border between Austria and Italy. It consists of two east-west-trending, approximately 140-km-long mountain ranges, the Carnic Alps and the Geeta Alps. The mountains are separated by Lethach Canyon and Galata Gorge to the east. The total area is approximately 830 km2. It became a global geopark in 2012. The geopark has approximately 19,600 residents, and it contains a handful of geological features, particularly a preserved Ordovician-Upper Permian sedimentary sequence. The largest plant fossil in Austria was discovered in the Geeta Alps.
