Qinghai Lake is located in the northeastern Tibetan Plateau 200 km northwest of Xining, the capital city of Qinghai Province. Qinghai Lake has an area of 4,583 km2, all of which is important geological heritage. Qinghai Lake became a national geopark after being approved by the Ministry of Land and Resources in December 2011. The park is home to a variety of distinctive geological features and landscapes, including plateau lakes represented by Qinghai Lake, rivers with splendid scenery, such as the Buha River and Shaliu River, swamp wetlands represented by Xiannvwan, and islands represented by Bird Island. With a combination of lakes, rivers, wetlands and deserts, the park has remarkable scientific and aesthetic value and is the leading tourist attraction in Qinghai’s tourism industry.
