Picture stones are mainly ornamental, and by appreciating them, viewers may increase their abilities in aesthetics appreciation. Collectors often seek picture stones with spiritual significance and internal connotations. Picture stones are widespread throughout China in the gravel layers of rivers, lakes and swamps and in the gobi, deserts, pluvial layers, talus accumulation layers, colluvial layers, pebble beaches and coastal areas.
