The time interval of the Phanerozoic Eon is from the lower boundary of the Cambrian Period (542 million years ago) to the present, and the Phanerozoic Eonothem includes all of the rocks that formed during this time. During this period, abundant higher living organisms appeared and evolved rapidly. The strata are well preserved, which has facilitated detailed studies of them. The Phanerozoic Eon (Eonothem) is further subdivided into the Palaeozoic Erathem (Era), Mesozoic Erathem (Era) and Cenozoic Erathem (Era).
