Parque Nacional Vicente Perez Rosales, the first national park in Chile, was established in 1926. It is located in the southern Los Lagos region. The iconic image of this national park is the reflection of the volcano on the lake. Currently, Chile has 32 national parks in its national park system. Many are in high elevation areas in southern Chile and feature fjord shoreline landscapes, which have become a characteristic of Chile’s national park system. In the Pacific, the Rapa Nui National Park on Easter Island was added to the World Heritage List by UNESCO as a cultural heritage site in 1995 because of its unique giant stone statues.
