Loud sand is also called ‘singing sand’. This is a natural phenomenon where dry loose sand, in a specific natural environment, generates sound, or when the sound sound is caused by an external force. This phenomenon often occurs in sand dunes along lakes, ocean coasts and large deserts. Some people call this phenomenon along lakes and coasts ‘loud sand’ and the phenomenon in the desert ‘singing sand’. There are numerous explanations for the cause of the sound, including air vibration theories, such as the resonance box hypothesis, the air cushion hypothesis, the friction shear hypothesis, the surface structure hypothesis, the sand dune sliding hypothesis and the quartz piezoelectric hypothesis.
