This geopark is centred on an active volcano in Bali, northeastern Indonesia, between two huge calderas that were formed 22,000 years ago, which is part of the active Pacific volcanic chain. It became a member of the Global Geopark Network in 2012. The area is rich in macro- and micro-volcanic landforms formed over the past few millennia. The Batur volcano is a typical stratovolcano composed of volcanic debris and lava flows. Over geologic history, two large volcanic eruptions produced a unique crater wall and formed today’s deep crater lake. The Batur volcano has erupted at least 22 times since 1800. There are many natural and cultural attractions on Bali, and the active Batur volcano is special because of its unique geological features and magnificent scenery. The geopark also illustrates the distinctive local customs related to Hinduism of the Balinese people.
