Honghu Lake is one of China’s largest freshwater lakes and is the largest lake in Hubei Province. It is located in a depression in southern Hubei Province between the Changjiang (Yangtze River) and Dongjing River. The lake has a depth of 25 m and an area of 413 km2. Its eastern and western sides are connected to the Changjiang (Yangtze River). Honghu Lake is shaped like a polygon with straight shores and a flat bottom. The lake contains extensive lush aquatic plants and abundant fish and shrimps. It is China’s most important freshwater fish habitat. There are 84 fish species and 92 plant species, which contribute to the export of 200,000 kg lotus seeds annually. The lake is also home to many migratory birds, such as wild ducks and wild geese. There are 39 species of wintering birds, including 18 species of wild ducks. In addition to the rich aquatic produce, Honghu Lake is also famous for its spectacular scenery.
