The idea of setting up an urban geopark was initiated and promoted by Wu Zhenyang (Young Ng) and volunteers of the Association for Geoconservation of Hong Kong in 2006. The geopark is located in northeastern Hong Kong and covers an area of 100 km2. It became a global geopark in 2011. It comprises Sai Kung Volcanic Rock Geoarea and the Northeast Sedimentary Rock Geoarea with a total of eight scenic sites. The four scenic sites in the Sai Kung Volcanic Rock Geoarea include High Island, Uk Kong, Ninepins Islands and Sharp Island. The geological features include Cretaceous hexagonal columnar joints in acidic volcanic rocks and stunning coastline and waters. The Northeast Sedimentary Rock Geoarea comprises four scenic sites, including Tung Ping Chau, Yan Chau Tong and Tolo Harbour/Port Island.
