Common Mental Disorders and Folk Mental Illnesses

Abstract

Common mental disorders encompass spectrum of anxiety and depressive disorders. They are associated with significant disability and might not be recognized in the primary health settings. CMDs are associated with multiple social factors which influence the prevalence, presentation, and health seeking. Clinical presentation of CMDs varies across cultures, and it is necessary for health professionals to be aware of the myriad of presentations. Treatment of CMDs needs to incorporate the existing explanatory models in managing these common conditions.
