Introduction

School lunch and gender research examines whether, how, and why eating differs among girls and boys and whether or not women and men are differently involved in feeding students at school. It is a subfield of school food research. The school food literature is concerned with understanding the underlying values and related behaviors associated with food in schools and with analyzing the goals and implementation of school food policy. This entry uses the terms school food, school lunch, and school meals interchangeably to refer to food or nutritional supplements available to students and the related policies governing the purchase, distribution, and consumption of food in and around schools. Publications delved into all possible scenarios for student eating: breakfast, lunch, snacks, supplemental nutrition, and take-home-from-school food staples for the poorest of students.
