Introduction

It has been observed recently that there is a growing social appetite for the “story” that surrounds food products and the modern food system. Part of this unfolding and evolving story involves a resurgence of interest in foods and farm commodities of local and regional provenance (Feagan 2007). The reasons for this are rehearsed elsewhere in this volume in relation to local food and in an expansive and expanding literature on Alternative Agri-Food Networks. However, it is in this context that there is renewed interest in one long-standing feature of the North American food retail landscape, in particular, the farmers’ market.
