Brief description of history and current situation of higher education system in Slovakia.
Higher Education System Development
Education in the territory of current Slovakia has been developing since the ninth century. It was related to the arrival of the Slavic missionaries, Constantine, and Methodius to the Great Moravia. After the collapse of the Great Moravian Empire, Slovakia lost the opportunity to develop itself as an independent state for several centuries. It became part of the Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy where it was officially not possible to use the mother tongue.
The development of Slovak modern higher education began after the establishment of Czechoslovakia in October 1918. Comenius University was founded in Bratislava in 1919.
