The Development of a Higher Education System in Malta

The Maltese Archipelago, made up of the main island Malta, the sister island of Gozo, and a smaller uninhabited island of Comino, has a total population of about 425,000, a land area of 316 km2, and a population density of c. 1,350 per km2. Since independence from the British Empire in 1964, the major political milestone has been the accession to the European Union in 2004.

The higher education landscape in Malta has been dominated by the University of Malta for more than 230 years. It remains the only publicly funded university. The main vocational college, the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST), started providing higher education programs in 2008. Due to recent policy developments, the sector has now been further widened to include other public and private providers of higher education.
