Abstract

This chapter examines the effects on the skin of substances that are able to cause physical or psychological dependence (including smoking, alcohol, as well as drugs), but which are not medicines. There are few specific dermatologic disorders that are exclusively caused by alcohol, smoking, or drugs. If these substances do have an influence on dermatological diseases, they usually change their incidence or severity. In addition, the consumption of alcohol, tobacco, or drugs can change the response to medical drugs. A sufficient therapeutic regime of a skin disease requires that patients should be influenced to change their consumption habits.
