Abstract
The monocotyledons comprise some 70,000 species, of which about 10% are recognized as succulents. Succulence occurs in 5 of the 11 orders of the group. Molecular phylogenetic studies have resulted in a well-founded backbone relationship among monocot clades. The order Asparagales has been found to be monophyletic in all recent studies, but its division in families has been the subject of considerable debate. The APG Classification opts for a smaller number of widely circumscribed families. For the present volume, it is argued that retaining the traditional more narrowly circumscribed families is to be preferred, without concessions as to monophyly of the recognized taxa.
