Definition
Over the past decades, continuous fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP) have become important engineering materials, especially in areas of lightweight structures. In order to take advantage of these composite materials, new technologies in terms of design, manufacture, assembly, quality assurance, etc. must be applied (Barbero, 2010; Gay, 2015; Jones, 2015; Altenbach et al., 2018).
Continuous FRPs are composed of topologically unconnected thin, endless fibers, which are embedded in a continuous polymer matrix. Due to their high strength and stiffness, the fibers (with a diameter of approximately 10 μm) have predominantly load-bearing functions, whereas the rather weak matrix holds the fibers in their position and keeps the structure in its shape.
