Knowles, James Kenyon (∗April 14th, 1931 in Cleveland, Ohio, USA; †November 1th, 2009 in Sierra Madre, California, USA) was a distinguished applied scientist in the field of continuum mechanics. He made lasting contributions to a broad range of problems in the linear and nonlinear theories of elasticity.

Family
At 15, James K. Knowles beseeched his mother to buy him a calculus book. He quickly completed working through the book and that set his life course. It was 2 years after his family moved to Phoenix, AZ, from Lakewood, OH, where he was born. Phoenix in 1945 was a small city on the edge of a vast desert where a boy could have a horse and work at a stable.
Skipping 8th grade, he went to North Phoenix High School where he developed leadership skills among a wide circle of friends and as president of a boys’ association. There he added to his love of baseball and horses, with a love of music, art, and the outdoors.
