Glykophorine sind Typ-1-Membranproteine („single-pass“), die stark glykosyliert sind. Die Glykophorine A (GPA) und B (GPB) tragen die MNS-Antigene (MNS-Blutgruppensystem) und stellen Rezeptoren für Zytokine und Pathogene wie Plasmodium falciparum dar. Die Antigene vom Gerbich(GE)-Blutgruppensystem sind auf den Glykophorinen C und D lokalisiert.
