Abstract

This chapter aims to explain the range of congenital anomies that are encompassed by the term neural tube defects (NTD). Both cranial and spinal abnormalities occur which arise during embryological development due to defects in morphogenesis of the neural tube. They range from anencephaly to spina bifida occulta. The commonest congenital nervous system defect encountered remains spina bifida despite the overall incidence of neural tube defects declining. The chapter explains the classification, pathogenesis, assessment, management, treatment, and prognosis related to these conditions.
