Zusammenfassung

Abgesänge auf den Nationalstaat gingen nach Ende des Kalten Krieges oft einher mit dem Verweis auf erstarkende globale Städte und subnationale Regionen. Die Globalisierung schien Regionalismen ökonomisch und politisch zu begünstigen. Dieses Kapitel befasst sich historisch einordnend mit der Frage, inwiefern globale Metropolregionen in den USA tatsächlich eine eigenständige Regionalpolitik und eigene politische Institutionen entwickelt haben, um den neuen Realitäten globaler Märkte im 21. Jahrhundert zu begegnen.
