Zusammenfassung
Die Organellbezeichnung Peroxisom wurde 1966 von de Duve und Baudhuin eingeführt und geht auf den Gehalt an Wasserstoffperoxiden zurück, die durch Oxidasen gebildet und durch Katalase abgebaut werden. Peroxisomen kommen in allen menschlichen Zellen mit Ausnahme der Erythrozyten vor. Die Organellmembran besteht aus peroxisomenspezifischen integralen Membranproteinen. Die peroxisomale Matrix enthält mehr als 50 Enzyme für eine Vielzahl anabolischer Funktionen, wie z. B. Plasmalogenbiosynthese, Gallensäuresynthese, und auch katabolischer Funktionen, wie z. B. Abbau von Wasserstoffperoxiden, von überlangkettigen Fettsäuren („very long chain fatty acids“, VLCFA) und von Phytansäure. Die besondere Bedeutung von Peroxisomen für das menschliche Stoffwechselnetzwerk zeigen autosomal-rezessiv und X-chromosomal vererbte Krankheiten der Peroxisomen.
