Zusammenfassung
In Deutschland werden bei etwa jedem 15. Neugeborenen große Fehlbildungen (z. B. Spina bifida, Lippen-Kiefer-Gaumen-Spalte) diagnostiziert, ungefähr ein Fünftel davon sind schwer und lebensbedrohlich. Kinder mit angeborenen Fehlbildungen machen etwa ein Drittel aller pädiatrischen stationären Aufnahmen aus. Die angeborenen Entwicklungsdefekte sind die häufigste Ursache der neonatalen Mortalität und benötigen häufig intensive lebenslange Behandlungen, die hohe Kosten verursachen. Diese Kinder sind somit eine sehr wichtige Patientengruppe in der Pädiatrie.
