Definition

Gears are a high-performance machine element used for transmitting power through parallel, crossed, or skew axes. Due to their complex geometry and the requirements to accuracy, gears pose a special challenge in engineering. The running behaviors of gears regarding load carrying capacity, acoustics, and efficiency are directly related to the product properties due to manufacturing such as tolerances and surface integrity.

Theory and Application

Gears can be manufactured by means of various manufacturing technologies which differ in terms of the achievable workpiece quality as well as productivity, depending on the type of gear to be manufactured. Both non-cutting and cutting processes are established for industrial production, whereby cutting processes dominate when high demands are placed on the performance of the gear.
