Definition

In the field of machining technology, the processes of deep hole drilling are defined for drilled boreholes with a length-to-diameter ratio of more than lt/D = 3 (VDI 3210), whereas in the industry deep hole drilling processes are often defined for drilling with length-to-diameter ratios of more than lt/D = 10, because conventional drilling tools are available up to this ratio. The field of deep hole drilling with small diameters or micro deep hole drilling is known as deep hole drilling with gun drills featuring a tool diameter smaller than d = 2 mm. In some cases deep hole drilling with tools smoothly bigger than d = 2 mm is also described as deep hole drilling with small diameters. For the production of deep holes with small diameters, there is a range of manufacturing processes existing, which differ with respect to the possible hole dimensions and quality, repeatability, processing times, as well as the economic...
