Definition

Modern slavery is a serious issue in many parts of the world, in economically developed and developing countries. The United Nations (2003) has stated that “Slavery and slavery-like practices continue to be among the greatest human rights challenges facing the international community.” It occurs in these main forms: human and sex trafficking and forced/unpaid labor in domestic and business environments. Numerous regions of the world are creating or updating legislation based on the United Nations principles to eliminate modern slavery. Yet, implementations of slavery prevention and elimination measures such as governance, reporting, and enforcement are still in infancy; they suffer from critical weaknesses and require serious improvements.
