Sustainability of Climate Change Adaptation Measures in Rivers State, South-South, Nigeria

Abstract

Climate change is a multidimensional and sectorial issue all over the world. The incidence of climate change variations has, in recent times, affected global food production, supply, and farm income of the farmers. This study investigated the sustainability of climate change adaptation strategies among Maize-based farmers in Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State with the following objectives: to identify the sustainable climate change adaptation strategies as well as to ascertain the sustainability index of those climate change adaptation strategies practiced in the study area. Data were obtained through the administration of questionnaire to the maize-based farmers. Multistage sampling was used to select 64 maize-based farmers in the study area. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical tools such as the mean, frequency count, percentages, and sustainability index. Results showed the sustainable and unsustainable climate change adaptation strategies adopted by the farmers. Results further revealed that the climate change adaptation strategies practiced in the area were sustainable. An enlightenment campaign should be organized in the state to educate and expose more farmers to the sustainable adaptation strategies such that they would withstand the devastating effects of the changing climate in the study area.
