Definition

Liposarcoma (LPS) is one of the most common types of sarcomas seen in adults. It is believed that LPS are derived from the residual rests of primitive mesenchymal tissue; however, on rare occasions they may also develop from a pre-existing lipoma. They are commonly found as a primary tumor in the deep soft tissues of the proximal extremities, and retroperitoneum. Metastasis to the lung in not uncommon; however, primary LPS in the lung is rare, especially the pleura.

Clinical Features

  • Incidence

    Primary pleural LPS is exceedingly rare with less than 20 cases reported

  • Age

    Age of presentation ranges from 19 to 80 years of age, with a median age of 50 years.

  • Sex

    Older men are predominately affected; however, it may occur in women as well.

  • Site

    Pleura

  • Treatment

    Treatment consists of surgical resection, radiation, or chemotherapy. Radiation therapy seems to show some benefit.
