International statistical classification of diseases and related health problems
Definition
The ICD is an international standard diagnostic classification system and is the foundation for identifying health trends and statistics globally. As a diagnostic coding tool, clinicians and other providers, researchers, health informatics specialists, and policy makers utilize ICD to better understand general epidemiology, global health management, and clinical decision-making for specific populations. This system is the standard utilized to monitor the incidence and prevalence of disease and analyze the general health of a specific population. In addition to allowing for the storage and retrieval of diagnostic information, these records are used to compile national mortality and morbidity statistics. Additionally, ICD is used for resource allocation decisions and reimbursement for health conditions by many countries.
