Definition
The criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) were revised in 2013 when the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders launched their fifth edition (DSM-5 2013). Currently, two sets of criteria exist to diagnose PTSD, one corresponding to individuals older than 6 years and another corresponding to children 6 years and younger (i.e., PTSD preschool subtype). According to the DSM-5, for an individual older than 6 years to be diagnosed with (PTSD), he/she must have been exposed to a traumatic event in one or more of the following ways: (1) directly experienced the event, (2) personally witnessed the event, (3) discovered that the event happened to a family member or close friend (if this event concerned actual or threatened death of a friend or family member, the situation must have been accidental or violent), and (4) experienced ongoing or extreme personal exposure to details associated with trauma;...
