Definition
Performance-oriented mobility assessment (POMA) is an instrument that assesses aspects of balance and gait involved in normal daily activities (Tinetti 1986). There are various versions of the POMA that are in use; the most common one consists of 16 items where 9 items assess balance (POMA-B) and 7 items assess gait (POMA-G). The assessment requires no equipment or specialized training to administer. Administration involves direct observation of the individual, as well as evaluation of contributing factors that may affect performance such as mental and psychological status. These include anxiety associated with mobility problems, depression, or lack of motivation to perform difficult maneuvers and difficulty in effective problem solving when barriers or problems arise. The assessment can be used clinically to identify (1) mobility problems during daily activity, (2) potential reasons for the difficulties that may be remediable, (3) other potential problems...
