Description
The Perceptual Reasoning Index (PRI) was one of four derived indices from the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, 4th edition (WISC-IV; Wechsler 2003). Its primary purpose was to examine nonverbal fluid reasoning skills (i.e., the mental operations used to examine novel problems, organize thoughts, examine rules and logical relationships, and create and test solutions). Additionally, the PRI provided a direct assessment of cognitive processesincluding visual perception, visual-motor integration, visuospatial processing and coordination, and, to a lesser extent than its predecessor, mental/manual quickness and efficiency. The PRI was derived from a child’s performance on three core subtests, Block Design, Picture Concepts, and Matrix Reasoning, and emphasized reasoning in solving the kinds of problems not taught in school.
