Basic Biographical Information
Núñez Jiménez was born in the town of Alquizar in the present-day province of Artemisa, Cuba, on April 20, 1923. He was awarded a Bachelor Degree in Science and Literature at the Secondary School in Havana. He had deep concern for nature, and in 1940 (Álvarez 1956), he founded the Speleological Society of Cuba, together with several young friends, including Omar Sanchez, Osvaldo Aguirre, and Arturo Díaz. This enterprise was devoted to serious investigation of the national geography of Cuba, particularly its underground landscapes.
Through public examination, Núñez Jiménez obtained the position of Geography and History teacher at the Institute of Secondary Education of Vedado in Havana. A year later he began the same task at the Central University of Las Villas “Marta Abreu.” By 1956, he was accepted as a member of the National Board of Archaeology and Ethnology, the Ethnographic Society of Cuba, and the National Speleological Society in the USA.
