Overview
Solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) was developed at the Brief Family Therapy Center in Milwaukee during the late 1970s and early 1980s (de Shazer 1985; de Shazer et al. 1986) by two social workers and husband and wife team, Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg, who were trained in brief family therapy. Working closely with de Shazer and Berg over time was an interdisciplinary team of family therapists and researchers including social workers, clinical psychologists, social psychologists, and sociologists (Kim 2008). The interdisciplinary collaboration that resulted in the development of SFBT has also hastened recognition of SFBT by multiple disciplines and its use with a wide range of problems and populations across the life cycle.
