Definition

State of the beach as a socionatural system in a certain time, concerning its ecosystem functionality and satisfaction of human needs such as leisure, subsistence, and identity, within sanitary, ecological, and recreational dimensions.

Beach Environmental Quality

Environmental quality is a concept with a fuzzy definition in the literature, since beaches are moving between biocentrism approaches to sanitary parameters. Similarly, the general definition of beach quality helps to consolidate the concept of beach environmental quality (BEQ) because it suggests integration of indicators which represent the natural component with human welfare. According to Botero et al. (2013), most of the references related with BEQ concept focus on the description of natural characteristics of the beach environment, along with the condition of beach pollution caused by human activities or natural dynamics.
