Restraint is a condition of being inhibited or controlled (Merriam-Webster Dictionary online 2019). Restraint can be physical, chemical, and psychological (Sheldon et al. 2006; Browning 2012; Lawson 2004). In reference to animals, it is necessary to use restraint in order to perform medical procedures, give medications, to collect samples for diagnostic tests and to complete husbandry needs. In some cases animals serve a valuable use and some form of restraint is necessary for them to complete the task. Over the past three decades, there has been a definitive shift from acting from the standpoint of completing tasks as quickly as possible despite the struggle or stress from the animal to spending time calming and reducing the stress placed upon the animal in order to complete the task.
