Abstract

Periodontal disease represents an inflammation-driven insult to the supporting tissues of the dentition. It is a chronic, complex disease developing from an altered inflammatory response in association with a pathogenically evolving polymicrobial infection. This complex inflammatory state has a direct impact on the supporting tissues of the dentition along with the potential for systemic sequelae with diabetes. This review explores our current understanding of the impact of diabetes on periodontal disease and dental impalnt therapy as well as the potential impact of periodontal disease on diabetes.
