Abstract

Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is now considered a gold-standard treatment of advanced arthritis of the knee [1–4]. The early convalescence with standard surgical techniques however is longer than that of total hip arthroplasty, with significant pain and disability from the surgical insult delaying functional recovery. The traditional surgical approach for exposure in knee replacement remains the median parapatellar (MPP) approach. This was initially described by von Langenbeck in 1874 and then popularized by Insall in 1971 [5]. Although this approach is the only true extensile approach, it incises the quadriceps tendon, which may delay functional recovery.
