Synonyms
Definition
A benign tumor of mature adipocytes within (intramuscular) or between (intermuscular) skeletal muscles.
Clinical Features
Incidence
Lipoma is the most common soft tissue tumor in the adulthood accounting for about one half of all soft tissue tumors (Myhre-Jensen 1981; Rydholm and Berg 1983). However, its real incidence may be underestimated. The frequency of lipoma seems to be higher in the obese population. Intramuscular/intermuscular lipoma accounts for less than 10% of all benign lipomas.
Age
Intramuscular/intermuscular lipoma more frequently affects middle aged adults (usually between the fourth and sixth decades).
Sex
There is a male predominance.
Site
Intramuscular/intermuscular lipoma usually affects the large muscles of the thigh, shoulder, arm, and trunk.
Treatment
Simple excision is the recommended treatment.
Outcome
Intramuscular/intermuscular lipoma is benign with no capacity to dedifferentiate or metastasize....
