Definition

Umbanda is a Brazilian religion based upon the notion of possession by spirits. Created in the beginning of the twentieth century in Rio de Janeiro, it blends African religions with Catholicism, Spiritism (Allan Kardec), and considerable indigenous beliefs.

In Umbanda, one worships and incorporates spirits (not gods). These are: Exus, Pombagiras, Caboclos, Peoples of the East, Old Blacks, Cowboys, Seamen, and Bahians. Although the Orixás (African gods) command the 7 lines of the spiritual types, they are sometimes incorporated into them as well. This depends upon each different terreiro(temple) and the manners in which they relate to possession. There is no consensus on this. Most frequently, it is the spirits of each Orixá’s line that are incorporated, and these spirits carry with them the vibrations of their respective Orixá.
