Abstract
A major poet of the Late English Renaissance, Marvell was recognized as such only in the nineteenth century, as his political activity and satiric writings had overshadowed his value as a poet in the Neoplatonic tradition. His lyrical poetry uniquely draws upon both the Metaphysical poets in exuberant logical wit, passion, and sensuousness and on the Cavaliers in polished elegance and certain stock motifs.
