Abstract

Troponin C (TnC) is a founding member of the EF-hand family of Ca2+ binding proteins. It functions as the receptor for Ca2+on the thin filament of striated muscle. Association of Ca2+, with the regulatory Ca2+binding sites in TnC, induces muscle contraction. Subsequent release of Ca2+allows the muscle to relax. There are two forms of TnC; one is found in fast skeletal muscle (sTnC), whereas the other is found in cardiac and slow skeletal muscle (cTnC).
